Hecate is one of the few deities of the Greek pantheon that survived the transfer of power from the older Titans to the newer Olympians. One way of looking at this is that she was one of the indigenous spirits of the region who was so powerful, popular and indeed relevant that her worship continued when the Mycenaeans arrived with their new gods.
Whatever the case, she is still relevant today, this goddess of the liminal zone. She tends to the unquiet dead and nurses newborns. She grants victory in battle and competitions, and receives offerings of refuse to begin the process of decomposition. Watching from the harbour, she looks out towards the horizon at what comes next and helps us finish stories that have run their course.
